How much alkaline water should you drink a day?

How much water do you drink every day? If you’re like the average American, you may only be getting about half as much water as you need. According to the USDA, most Americans drink between three and four cups a day. The rest of our drinks are coming from other sources, including coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

Water is critical to life and virtually every bodily process and function. While common wisdom recommends drinking about 8 cups a day, even that might not be enough. According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the ideal fluid intake might be closer to double that amount for men, or 15.5 cups, and about 11.5 cups a day for women.

Is Alkaline Water Good for You?

Getting More Water into Your Day

Once you have increased your water intake, you can begin to switch to alkaline water instead of tap or bottled water. Rather than switching all at once, transition slowly to give your body’s pH levels time to adjust gradually. This can help reduce the risk of certain symptoms associated with the release of toxins that can occur when switching to alkaline water, including fatigue, muscle aches, and headaches. However, these symptoms are also a good sign that your body and the water are doing what they are supposed to do.

Use an alkaline water filter to make it easy to drink healthy water on the go. Start with a tall glass of alkaline water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and drink again after any strenuous exercise, which can rapidly deplete fluid stores. Research has shown that alkaline water is even better at rehydrating after a workout than regular water!

Finally, drink on an empty stomach, when possible, or at least half an hour before meals and no earlier than an hour and a half or two hours after meals. The stomach needs acid to digest properly, which can be slowed by alkalinity, so drink your alkaline water freely but separate from mealtimes.
